On the 27th of April, Amsterdam belongs to its people. FFGR secures private courtyard access, rooftop positions, and canal boat hire for the orange day that defines Dutch identity.
King's Day — what it is, and why it requires preparation
On the 27th of April each year, the Netherlands celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander with an event that has no real parallel in European public life. Amsterdam's canals are navigated by approximately 2,500 private boats. The Vondelpark, the Museumplein, and the Jordaan district become an improvised flea market, concert venue, and street party simultaneously. Orange — the national colour of the House of Orange-Nassau — appears on every surface and every person. The city's population effectively triples for the day.
For a visitor who has not been to King's Day before, this requires context and preparation. Without the right positions, the day can be overwhelming; with the right positions, it is one of the most extraordinary public celebrations in the world.
The FFGR King's Day programme
FFGR Nederland secures three categories of access for King's Day. Canal boat hire: a private barge or traditional 'sloep' moored from the evening before, stocked with provisions, departing from a private mooring and joining the canal traffic with a licensed captain. Rooftop positions: a small number of canal-house properties open their rooftop terraces to private groups, providing elevation above the crowd with a view across the roofline of the Herengracht. Courtyard access: several Amsterdam institutions — a hotel, a private club, a cultural foundation — open their inner courtyards to guests, providing a retreat from the crowd with catering, while remaining at the heart of the celebration.
- Canal boat hire: private barge from Prinsengracht mooring — capacity 8–20 persons
- Rooftop positions: canal-house terrace access — 4 properties available, each maximum 12 persons
- Courtyard access: private institution courtyard with catering — details on application
- Chauffeur: vehicle and driver on standby at pre-agreed collection point throughout the day
- Booking window: October–February for following April — allocation strictly limited
King's Day is not a spectacle to observe from a distance. It is a city that has decided, collectively, to be happy — and the only correct response is to join it.
